Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I visit the program? Is my child able to come too?

A: Yes! Please contact us to set up a date and time to tour our facility and meet the staff. Your child is welcome and encouraged to come, any siblings are also welcome to join you on the tour.

Q: How do I register my child for before school or after school care?

A: From the home page, click on the arrow at the bottom of the yellow"Before School, After School, & Drop-in" tile. Registration forms are at the bottom of the page, and detailed registration instructions are included on this page and in the "2018/2019 Registration" form.

Q: How do I register for Drop-In care?

A: Complete and submit the registration forms included at the bottom of the page after selecting the "Before School, After School, & Drop-in" tile. You will need to submit the registration fee listed in the registration instructions, and submit payment in advance for the drop-in care dates that you have requested (the partial tuition payment listed on the registration form is not applicable for families registering for drop-in care). Requests for drop-in care should be made in writing (we suggest using email) at least 48 hours prior to the care dates you are registering for.

It is important to note that drop-in care is dependent on available space within the program, spaces are not reserved until we have received payment and paperwork, and you have received confirmation from us that your dates have been reserved.

Q: What is your inclement weather policy?

A: If Fairfax County Public Schools are closed, It’s Elementary! is also closed.
If Fairfax County Public Schools have a 2 hour delay in the morning, before school care at It’s Elementary! will be closed.
If Fairfax County Public Schools close early due to worsening weather conditions, after school care at It’s Elementary! will be closed. Please make alternative arrangements for picking up your child from school for that day.

In the event of an emergency or Shelter-In-Place event, every attempt will be made to communicate
with parents via phone, email, and/or website as soon as it is safe and possible to do so. IF we are not at our location during an emergency (for example: when we are out dropping off or picking up students from school) and we are unable to return to the program, our alternate location will be the McLean Community Center on Ingleside Avenue.

Q: What is your illness policy?

A: If a child vomits, has a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more, experiences
diarrhea, or has a contagious rash such as but not limited to; pink eye, chicken pox, or hand foot
and mouth disease they MAY NOT ATTEND It's Elementary! while they are exhibiting any of these symptoms, and
also may not attend the program the day following any of these symptoms.

For example, if your child vomited on Monday, they will not attend the program on Monday OR on
Tuesday. They may return to the program on Wednesday if they did not exhibit any of the above listed symptoms on
Tuesday WITHOUT the aid of medications (such as any fever reducers or pain relievers like Tylenol, Advil,
Motrin, etc.).
This policy is in place because these medications often mask symptoms, and children return to school and the program too early, causing the illness to spread to other children. A child that did not have a fever all day but was also taking Motrin that day, is not "fever free".

It is very important that families follow our written illness policy, keeping a child that is ill at home, and frequent hand washing is the best way to keep our students, and their families, healthy.

A child may return to the program when;

 - they have not had any pain relieving or fever reducing medications for one full day

 - they have not had a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or contagious rash for at least one full day

 - if they have been prescribed antibiotics they have been taking them for a minimum of 48 hours.

Important! Please note: a doctor's note stating that a child may return to school or childcare does not override our illness policy.

It’s Elementary! agrees to notify the parent/guardian whenever their child becomes ill and the parent/guardian agrees to arrange for the child to be picked up within 40 minutes.

Q:Can my child complete their school project at It's Elementary!

A: Yes! We are happy to help. We have poster board, index cards, a fully stocked art room, and several computers than can be used for homework and projects. Just let us know what you need and we will do our best to help in any way we can.

Q: How do I arrange for transportation service to/from my child's soccer practice/friends house/grandma's house, etc.?

A: Our transportation service is available for families that have a child registered with our program. We can pick up from friends houses, flex academies held at their school, and just about anywhere else. We can also drop off our students at their sports practices and games, school performances, and even give them a ride home.

We will need the request made via email or phone and ask for 48 hours notice for all requests. The cost for transportation is $8 per trip when the destination is within the 22101, 22046, and part of the 22043 area codes. Area codes such as 22102, and parts of 22043 are $12 per trip. Ask for pricing in area codes not listed and for the 22043 area code. We will let you know either the same day or the following day after a request is made if we are available to provide transportation. Because transportation requests are made on a first come, first served basis it is always best to ask as far in advance as possible.

Q: When do you start registration for the next school year?

Q: When does registration for summer camp begin?

A: Summer camp registration is open for everyone in January. Check our website in January to see when registration has opened and our summer schedule has been posted.

Q: When can I register for winter and summer break camps?

A: Registration for winter break camp will open by the second week of November, and by the second week of February for spring break camp. Registration paperwork will be available on our website.

Q: How do I register for teacher work day camps?

A: Full time families pay no additional fees for teacher work days.

There is an additional cost to attend teacher work days for part time, before school only, and non registered families;

Part time families (if your student is registered after school school to attend less than 5 days per week) will pay an additional $40 to attend teacher work days (also known as student holidays) that fall on a day of the week that their child is already registered for within the after school program. The cost for part time families to attend teacher work days on days of the week that their child is not registered for is $65.

The cost to attend a teacher work day for families that are registered for before
school care only is $65.

The cost for non registered/outside families to attend teacher work days/student holidays is $70.

Q: Will my child receive help with their homework?

A: Yes! We will check each students homework upon completion for accuracy, and to be sure that all assignments were completed. We will also help when needed with completing their homework and provide assistance they may need with their homework. The amount of homework that your child completes when they are with us is completely up to the parents. We have an individual homework plan for each and every child. It can be that your child simply complete reading time or is being read to each day, all the way up to completing all assigned homework and any projects that are due. You are always able to chose what homework they should complete and can change your homework plan at any time.
